Upgrade SCCM R2 to v1606 (or 1610)

According to Microsoft, these are your supported upgrade paths:

In-place upgrade paths

You can upgrade the following to a fully licensed version of System Center Configuration Manager version 1511:

    • An evaluation install of System Center Configuration Manager version 1511
    • A release candidate install of System Center Configuration Manager
    • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 1
    • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 2
    • System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager
    • System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 1

+

You can upgrade the following to a fully licensed version of System Center Configuration Manager version 1606:

  • An evaluation install of System Center Configuration Manager version 1606
  • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 2
  • System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 1

So to get to v1606 or 1610 we will first have to either upgrade our SCCM 2012 R2 server to SCCM R2 SP1 or to v1511. I think it makes more sense to go directly to 1511 so we can then take advantage of the in-console upgrades after.

Here are the upgrade instructions for v1511. Basically you just run the ISO and select “Upgrade this site”. As with most SCCM upgrades, be sure you have 20 GB free on your install drive. Once you are upgraded to v1511 you can simply upgrade to 1602, 1606, and/or 1610 via the SCCM admin console under: \Administration\Overview\Cloud Services\Updates and Servicing
