Adding your first 2012 domain controller

A few months back we decided to take our three domain controllers and upgrade them to 2012 OS. By upgrade, I mean stand up a new server and do an in-place upgrade. None of us trust the MS upgrade paths – plus it’s always safer to start with a fresh build. Below is the step by step instructions for adding your first 2012 DC to the domain.

Please note: For the sake of length, I did not include steps for doing an in place upgrade to the server. This solely focuses on the Active Directory Domain Controller side of things.

Current Domain and Forest Functional Levels are both 2008 R2.

**You can have a mixed environment of 2008R2 and 2012 DCs without issue. Also, if this is the first DC to be added on a new OS you will have to upgrade the schema. You can do it manually or the installer will do it for you. **

*The above page warns you that since you did not run AD prep, the schema needs upgraded. It will do it for you as a part of the process – no need to manually run AD prep anymore! Make sure you switch the user to one that is an enterprise admin
